PAWS An Animal Shelter Story
An Acoustic Night Special, aims to raise funds in aid of the relocation and the shelter’s rebuilding, resources for the animals in terms of food, medical expenses, bedding; basically all necessities and also to build awareness on animal ownership.?This fundraiser would also help create opportunities for the public to contribute or donate to shelter.

Having played at various popular clubs around Malaysia, The Big Band is no stranger to the stage.

Often requested to perform as backup band for artistes nationwide, it is a tribute to their musical prowess and professionalism in making the best of music no matter what they play. Through this tenacity, they have gathered a number of fans since they were formed in 1998.

Led by the talented vocalist and trumpeter Gareth Mark Cheow, The Big Band will entertain with a repertoire that includes the latest hits in Retro, R&B, Contemporary Rock and much more. Fans needn’t worry as The Big Band has only collected more tunes and talents as the years pass namely, their latest addition, Melor with her smooth vocals – the flaming ball of talent isn’t in any danger of extinguishing soon!

Join them as they come home to Ruai Supperclub, Sunway every night at 11.30pm – 1am. Enjoy the beats and 10% off all food and drinks on Mondays and Tuesdays, while ladies come in for free on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Watching jazz vocalist Margie Segers take the stage is to share an intimate experience with one of Indonesia’s living legends. Segers is widely acknowledged as the singer, who in the ’70s started the jazz trend and continuously shaped the scene in Indonesia.

Lucky for us here this side of the Straits, Segers has agreed to impart her knowledge at NBT’s upcoming Jazz Vocal workshop with pianist Michael Veerapen, who is regarded as one of Malaysia’s foremost musicians with a career — as musical director, composer, producer and arranger — spanning over 25 years.

Signal to Noise is composed of four very unique and accomplished improvisers – hailing from The U.S., Japan and France. The band about exploring methods and strategies of improvisation, whose music is grounded in jazz improvisation, blending concepts and principles from both Western and Eastern contemporary classical music. A significant element of Signal to Noise’s philosophy is best summarized by Mr. Anthony Braxton from a 1993 interview: “I want, that which happens when music happens, to happen. It’s not about me being the total energy that completes the process of the “ising” of the music.”

To end their 3 month long run at Sunway, Enava – a band of various acts and influences, are going to hit this last week with a bang.

Rocking and pumping the citizens of Borneo Rainforest Cafe and Ruai Supperclub, Sunway with fabulous live beats since December 2009, Enava will be performing their final set until the 27th February 2010. Enava has had the crowd singing and dancing to past and current chart-toppers of various music genres and promises an even funkier repertoire to end their season at Borneo
Rainforest @ Sunway.

The Ruai Supperclub is open from 5pm to 2am on Sundays to Thursdays and 5pm to 3am on Fridays, Saturdays & Eve of Public Holidays. Enava will take to the stage every night from 9.45pm onwards.

Turn on the passion with the multinational Latin Jazz Septet featuring Venezuelan, but Holland resident, Michael Simon (trumpet), France’s Christophe Turchi (soprano & tenor sax) and Malaysia’s Tay Cher Siang (p), Azmi Hairuddin (alto sax) and Lewis Pragasam (d) & (perc). Get to know guest musician Michael Simon who has had the opportunity to perform at his native Netherlands’ most important theaters, concert halls and festivals. And so far, he has accumulated an impressive curriculum. His work experience includes performances with top Latin and Jazz artists such as Lester Bowie, Denise Jannah and Rotterdams Fabrikaat Big Band.

Boy, can Rozz sing. A performer that defies anything generic, Rozz’s stage appearances are often vigorous and engaging. Trained as a classical vocalist by Anne Ridgeworth from the early age of 4, Rozz has since dedicated himself to the study of music and theatre. His education and career as a performance artist eventually landed him at the epicenter of the actors’s domain: New York City, where he was featured in various on and off-Broadway productions. Come and experience Rozz’s spectacular show.

Zalila Lee is one of Klang Valley’s best kept secrets. A veteran singer-songwriter in her own right, she’s a regular in the singer-songwriter circuit, gracing the stages of most acoustic venues in the city such as the Moonshine Homemade Acoustic show and last year’s No Black Tie Acoustic Series. Her impeccable rhythm-driven guitar playing and baritone vocals is reminiscent of a local Tracy Chapman and her penchant for intense gravity filled songs are guaranteed to give you goose bumps. She’s worked and collaborated with other local talents which include Mia Palencia, Rafique Rashid, Reza Salleh and Izzy Mohd. Not to be missed.

Brazilian percussionist & singer Valtinho Anastacio returns to NBT for a rare two nights of bossa nova hits. The sessionist and accompanist extraordinaire who creates rhythmic poetry with the congas, the pandeiro, the berimbau, the agogos, the abes, the caixas and more has played with some of the world’s top musicians including Kazumi Watanabe, Jaco Pastorious, Omar Hakim, Bill Cosby, Astrud Gilberto, Eddie Van Halen and the Grammy-winning McCoy Tyner. Actor, singer-songwriter, ‘Here in My Home’ producer Pete Teo will play an acoustic set with two imminent rock bands in a gig that, forgive the food pun, is much like an Oreo cookie — a smooth middle (set) sandwiched by rock hard richness. NBT offers a unique opportunity for all budding and established percussionists to come and soak up the knowledge and wisdom of a true beat maestro. Born in Brazil, Valtinho learnt to master the congas, the pandeiro, the berimbau, the agogos, the abes, the caixas and more. He went on to play and learn from some of Brasil’s top musicians before travelling to Tokyo to work with Japanese legends such as the luminous Ryuichi Sakamoto. His next stop, New York City, helped hone his craft and gigs with diverse musicians like Victor Bailey, Omar Hakim, Bill Cosby, Astrud Gilberto, Eddie Van Halen and the Grammy-winning McCoy Tyner gave this Brasillian musician all the breaks he would ever need. Malaysian born singer, songwriter and musician, Poova as she is known, has been singing and composing songs since she was a child, when she would sing and play her own piano compositions for friends and family. Mellow Motif is a collaboration between Natasha (vox), Eugene (piano), and friends. A band whose repertoire includes Jazz standards repertoire and selected Brazilian music, Mellow Motif has recently launched their album in Thailand in February 2009 under Warner Music and are currently in the process of producing their second album to be released in January 2010. International vocalist, Stacey Swanson, is an incredibly versatile singer who performs a vast array of musical styles including soul, blues & jazz and popular music. Stacey’s passion for music stems from early childhood when she would secretly record herself singing along to great singers such as Celine Dion. Stacey went on to study music following school where she began to explore herself as an artist, as a singer and performer, developing a great appreciation for Jazz and Blues artists such as Billie Holiday, Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald.

In her late teens Stacey endured some personal traumas and in seeking solace she found Joni Mitchell, ‘I was in awe of Joni during this time, it sounds cliché but her music helped me to find my way through some difficult times. Joni’s arrangements and lyrical ability are second to none’. Stacey has worked for Yamaha Music Schools teaching group keyboard lessons to children, and also taught privately.

In 2002 Stacey performed original music in Barcelona and Madrid with guitarist Miguel Vico Sanchez, receiving record company interest. In 2006 after graduating with a degree in Jazz, Popular and Commercial Music, Stacey performed throughout the UK and Europe with North East Cabaret band V, became lead singer of original band ‘The Drop’ before leaving in 2008 to spend the summer season performing on the Greek isle of Kos.

Developing herself as a singer/songwriter, in early 2009 Stacey made it to the regional finals of unsigned competition ‘Live and Unsigned’. Armed with a new sound, songs, passion and determination, there is a bright and exciting future ahead.
